PALITYA – PRE MATURE GREYING OF HAIR – HERBAL REMEDIES
Grey hair is a familiar sign of ageing but at times graying starts at young age. The age when greying starts depends on your genetic inheritance. Loss of hair color before the age of 35 is termed premature greying. In Ayurveda this is called Palitya. Persons with pitta type of constitution are prone to be affected by this ailment. A white hair is produced by the formation of numerous air spaces throughout the cells composing it.
Loss of hair color is due to a gradual decline in the production of a pigment- melanin the Bhrajaka Pitta in Ayurveda terminology , in the hair bulb. White hair has no pigment, and gray hair has some but not as much as a red, black or brown hair. Not all hairs respond in the same way or at the same time. So the graying process usually is gradual. The first grey hair usually appears near the temples the region of Shankha marma . Then the greyness spreads to the crown, and later to the back of the head.
# Rapid Graying : A black colour or the natural darkness of the hair cannot of itself suddenly turn white. Hairs grow for years with pigment inside them, and since they are ‘dead’ there is no process by which the melanin throughout a hair can be naturally destroyed rapidly (although it may be bleached by sunlight over many years). Apparent rapid greying may be due to a selective shedding of pigmented hair in a person who has some gray hairs, which are retained. Shedding of this kind usually takes several months, but can happen within a few days.
# CAUSES OF GREYING :
1. Stress and tension, Excessive passion, anger and psychic strain.which tightens the scalp and reduces circulation-Pitta aggravating life style. 2. Poor diet and imbalanced diet like – Excessive intake of tea, coffee, alcohol, meat, and fried, oily, greasy, spicy, sour, and acidic foods – Pitta aggravating diet. 3. Hormonal changes due to pregnancy or menopause. 4. Strong Medication for acute disease prolonged medication for chronic disease. 5. Illness and/or allergies sinusitis (peenas) and allergic rhinitis 6. Over-use of dyes 7. Genetic tendencies
Ayurveda further explains that in order to get thick glossy hair, one must ensure the roots are firm and the scalp healthy. Just as drought and blazing heat destroys a lawn, heat is detrimental to hair. Too much sun can dry the hair and weaken the scalp and hair roots.
Sometimes hair loss results from “high heat” within the body, which can also damage hair roots. Excessive intake of tea, coffee, alcohol, meat, and fried, oily, greasy, spicy, sour, and acidic foods disturbs Pitta in the body and can reduce the moisture and nutrients reaching the hair follicles and may lead to premature greying.Thus it is better to keep the brain and scalp cool, so even when washing hair, use cold or lukewarm water. Cold water is more efficient in removing soap, and helps to tone the scalp and refresh the nervous system.
# TREATMENT :
• A balanced diet rich in protein, minerals and vitamins, especially iron, sulphur, zinc, B-complex and Vitamin C, as well as essential fatty acid, is essential for healthy hair.
• Nutrients are key to healthy hair, but to be effective, they must reach the roots. Often tension in the scalp or fatty deposits block circulation, drying the oil glands of hair and literally starving the hair roots. Ayurveda recommends a simple oil application to the hair and head massage to relieve tension and improve circulation. A variety of herbal oils is used to nourish hair. The base oil in Ayurveda preparations is usually sesame or coconut oil. When oil is applied to the head, it nourishes, lubricates and strengthens the root and the skin of the scalp, and prevents hair loss and premature greying. It also improves circulation to the head, relaxing the muscles and nerve fibers.
•Panchkarma Therapies like Shirodhara, Takradhara, and Nasayam is used to treat chronic conditions of hair problems.
# Aromatherapy : The simplest method is to massage essential oils into your scalp every night. For dark hair, try rosemary, thyme or sage. For lighter hair, try german chamomile or lavender. Put 2-3 drops of the oil on your palms and rub into your scalp every night. This will help condition the skin of the scalp.
# Herbal Rinse : Herbal rinses are another way to reverse gray hair. ~ For dark hair, choose one or more:Rosemary ,Sage, Raspberry leaves,Parsley Ivy Berries,Catnip,Black Tea, Black coffee
~ For blond or light hair:Rsehips, red hibiscus,calendula,saffron,marigold,tumeric mullei, privet, yellow broom Choose some herbs from the lists above and put about 1/2 cup of dried herbs/flower/berries in 2 cups of water. Simmer for 30 minutes and then let it sit for another 2-3 hours. You will have a very strong “tea” for your hair. Strain out the vegetable matter and pour it on your hair after shampooing. Let it sit for several minutes and rinse out. Gradually you will notice your hair color changing. ~ Potato : For dark hair, boil 1 unpeeled potato. Cool the water and massage the potato-water onto your scalp and into your hair with a cotton ball. Leave it for 20 minutes and then rinse out.
~ Grey hair tends to be coarse and wiry, owing to a lack of moisture.Apply a hair mask once a week. Olive oil, avocado or banana are excellent nourishing masks. Aloevera gel and Jaswand(Hibiscus gel) are also used for hair packs.

IMPORTANCE OF GOOD DIGESTION & METABOILSM TO STAY HEALTHY
There are lots of books, Magazines, Articles etc. are being published on regular basis regarding the Nutritious, healthy and organic food and being read and practiced by Millions of people all around the world on daily basis but still the chart is rising only in terms of various diseases . Why is this so?
The whole world is Obsessed by Healthy, Macrobiotic food and Nutritious food but still making a habit of implementing Multi vitamin pills, Pills for calcium, pills for iron , vitamin C etc. in their daily routine . Why?
If one is eating healthy Nutritious food then why they need additional chemical supplements?
People all around the globe are now a days more concerned about their physical condition and thus they are opting for more Nutritional, Healthy and Organic food, but the irony is that even after doing so many things and taking so many precautions the diseases are not controlling ,rather the problems like Gastritis , Liver diseases , GERD ,Peptic and Duodenal Ulcers , Improper metabolism etc are on the augment.

Yes, these are the most important things which we all must and should know otherwise even though you eat the nourishing food that is also not at all going to help you .
These things might seem to be very simple but these are very Important part for the process of Digestion and metabolism.
Unless and until one not have good and proper Metabolism nothing is going to help. If a person have proper metabolism then the Proper Digestion and assimilation from the gut will be there and then only he or she will not be deprived of Iron, Calcium or essential Minerals and Vitamins.
# Aahar Pachan in Ayurveda
The process of digestion is known as Aahar Pachan in Ayurveda. In Ayurveda, any food (ahar) passes through the following: •Taste (Rasa) •Uses (Guna) •Potency (Veerya) •Metabolism resultant (vipak), and •Impact (prabhav)
It is said that rasas undertake gunas and is undertaken by veerya. This is suppressed by vipak and finally prabhav makes all of them resultant. Therefore, when we consume food, we must take into consideration the fact that our food should have calories needed as per age. Similarly calorie intake during pregnancy and lactation and disease or recuperation should also be considered. Calories must come in balanced form in terms of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. Food is consumed as solids or semi-solids and liquids. Salads must be an important segment of food. Water other than juices and milk is needed and must be pure and adequate.
# Signs of improper metabolism :
# Primary Signs :Constipation,Mental dullness,Unexplained fatigue,Bad breath
# Secondary Signs :Gas,Bloating,Coated tongue,Body odor,Dull skin,High cholesterol , Degenerative diseases
The main aim of Ayurvedic Aahar Pachan or the digestion process should be such that human beings can achieve the ultimate goal of the science. i.e., maintaining health and treating disease.
# We observing the inhabitants all around the world in their regular routine. They don’t even have time to eat properly.Mostly they are trying to finish the job of eating while on their way to the office.Today’s fast lifestyle habits are :
1.Just grabbing a piece of Sandwich or burger, pizza or anything and eating while walking to their work or running while eating etc. 2.Watching television or reading newspapers and eating . 3.Not chewing the food properly. 4.Eating either too fast or too slow. 5.Mostly drinking plenty of water just before the food or immediately after the food . 6.Going to sleep immediately after the dinner. And so many other such things.
# Do you know how these habits are damaging your health?
~ If you do not chew your food properly, then the proper mixing of saliva with the food will not be there. The Saliva contains an Amylase called Ptyalin which does the partial digestion of carbohydrates in the mouth itself. So if you are not chewing the food properly then automatically the first stage of digestion is incomplete.
~ If you are more focused on reading or watching the television during your meal or not sitting properly and peacefully at one place then automatically the proper secretion of the gastric juices will not be there and again will hamper the process of digestion.
~ Drinking water just before the food will kill the appetite and also immediately after the food will hamper the process of digestion because as per Ayurveda water is Guru guna i.e. Heavy and thus should not be consumed immediately after the food .
~ Going to sleep immediately after the food will cause indigestion and can cause so many problems too.
Thus, rather than focusing more on Organic and Nutritional stuff , first try to learn the proper process of eating .Whatever you eat either nutritious or not , food or medicines everything has to be metabolize first and then only it will yield proper effect.
# What Ayurveda Says :
Each person has a certain combination of tridoshas, known as his or her prakruti, and this uniqueness of each individual is a concept which is fundamental in ayurveda. If you went to see an ayurvedic healer, they would probably draw up a specialised eating plan based on the various factors such as age and gender, the doshic tendencies that need to be balanced at a given time, the strength of the body tissues and the digestive fibres, and the level of ama (toxins) in the body. The place where a person lives and the season are also factors that affect dietary dos and don’ts. However, there are some universally applicable principles that are important to follow:
1. Include the six tastes at every main meal 2. Choose foods by balancing physical attributes 3. Choose foods that are sattvic 4. Opt for whole, fresh, in-season, local foods 5. Rotate menus and experiment with a variety of foods 6. Include spices and herbs in your daily diet
# Follow the rules and good health will surely come your way…not quite. In ayurveda, the way in which you eat is just as important as what. The theories are complex, but here are five introductory guidelines to aid good digestion:
1. Eat sitting down in a settled environment, and maintain a good posture. 2. Stimulate digestion before the meal :Weak digestive fire (agni) may lead to fatigue after eating, so before a full meal try eating a one-inch piece of fresh ginger with a few drops of lemon juice and a pinch of salt. This stimulates the saliva and the digestive enzymes, helping efficient digestion. 3. Avoid cold drinks at meals. 4.Do not skip breakfast and avoid heavy food at night. 5.As far as possible eat fresh food. 6. Make lunch the largest meal of the day. 7. Do not eat after 10p.m.
So Simply eating healthy food will not gives proper results. The way of eating the food is also very important.

PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) – NATURAL CURE
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, also known as PCOS or PCOD (polycystic ovarian disease), is a very common hormonal disorder in women.
AYURVEDA classifies PCOS as a Kapha disorder.Vata is responsible for movement of the follicle during the ovarian cycle, the rupture of the ovary wall releasing the matured ovum, the movement of the fimbriae – the finger like projections that guide the ovum into the fallopian tubes and the movement of the ovum towards the uterus.The action of the hormones expresses the nature of pitta, the energy responsible for transformation.Kapha’s heavy cool qualities nourish the development of the tissues that form and support the reproductive system including the nurturing energy supporting growth of the follicle during the ovarian cycle.PCOS is due to kapha blocking vata and pitta, hence movement is obstructed and the transformation process is suppressed.
Artava dhatu affected by the heavy sticky qualities of kapha and ama creates srota dushti in artavavaha srota. Apana vayu in artavavaha srota becomes stagnant – sanga, due to excessive kapha and ama accumulation blocking the channel impeding the flow of vata in the ovarian cycle. Because vata is blocked, pitta is blocked as well as pitta in order to act as the intelligence behind transformation needs the movement of vata in order for its energy to have potential. As pitta is blocked the hormones that carry the energy of transformation are unable to initiate their action. The accumulated kapha is expressed in the formation of the cyst in the ovary as it takes on a heavy white sticky quality expressing kapha and ama.
Due to vata and pitta being blocked in artava dhatu the other functions of both these doshas begin to become aggravated. Pitta aggravation at the level of bhrajaka pitta and ranjaka pitta manifests as acne and increased body hair. Menstrual problems manifest due to the aggravation of all three doshas but namely apana vayu.
“Without the aggravation of Vata, the vagina does not get disordered in women, hence it should be treated before Pitta and Kapha” – Astanga Hrdayam
# Treatment of PCOS With Allopathic Medicines :
Allopathy treats the condition on lines of hormonal imbalance and the major treatment includes HRT (hormone replacement therapy) where subsequent hormones are administered after proper evaluation of the patient. Apart from that, diet and certain exercises are also recommended. Apart from that, there is a growing belief that PCOS occurs due to malfunction of the hormone insulin and hence diabetic drugs like metformin may also be prescribed by your doctor for the same. Surgery is also an option exercised where the ovary is punctured or the cystic tissue above the ovary is destroyed for better hormonal gain. However, all these have their own after effects and you must evaluate all options about it by talking with your gynecologist and personally researching on the net. This rule not only applies to allopathy but also to other streams of medicine as after all it is your body.
In taking hormones, it further depletes your endocrinal system and puts them in sleep. The stuff that has to be naturally released by the body, once delivered with artificial means puts the body in a lazy mode. The HRT treatment may give you good results but is not recommended in long run as it can cause other problems.
# Now taking in account the above-mentioned treatment modalities, we can place a pattern for proper evaluation and treatment modalities for PCOS.
1. Eat at regular intervals. For example, if you have breakfast, lunch, and dinner between 8 to 9, 12 to 2 and 8 to 9 respectively, see to it that you follow these timings as the thyroid gland become trained to secrete juices in these times. Any variations and it puts pressure on the glands. Doesn’t matter even if you gulp down a glass of milk, but the timings must be maintained.
2. Salt restriction is another major aspect. Prepare food without salt. Take as much as you want in the plate (only one helping) then add salt to taste. Prefer saindhav salt (Himalayan crystal salt).
3. Have a papaya for breakfast/dinner at least 2-3 times a week until your cycles regularize. Apart from that also intake porridge prepared from Ragi extract (nachini, Eleusine coracana). prefer crystal sugar (Khadisakhar, Mishri) for taste instead of normal sugar. Weight watchers can prefer sugar substitutes however crystal sugar is very safe.
4. Avoid sleeping after lunch. Have a glass of buttermilk (prepared without salt).
5. Stay away from direct/indirect use of the following items; Brinjals, Peas, Peanuts, cauliflower, seafood, pickles, curds (buttermilk is okay), green chilies, mustard, bakery products (pastries okay).
# Here is List of some simple herbal decoctions, which if taken over a period of 2 to 3 months will definitely help:
1. Take Ashwagandha roots (Withania somnifera; entire about 150 grams), Arjun bark (Terminalia arjuna; about 70 grams) from a local herb shop. Divide both of these into 30 equal parts. Now boil 1 part every morning in 3 cups of water (approximately 150 ml) and reduce to 1 cup. Now filter this mixture and add 1 cup of cow’s milk to it. Boil the mixture again over a low flame until milk remains. Add 2 cardamoms while boiling. Consume this milk early morning empty stomach. Little sugar can be added for taste. The remaining filtrate of Ashwagandha and Arjun can be used similarly in evening. During summer months, Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus var. javanica) can be substituted for Ashwagandha.
2. After 30 days or 35 days if the periods do not commence have the following mixture for 3 days, 10 grams Nagkeshar (Mesua ferra flower stamens), 10 gms crystal sugar (Khadisakhar, Mishri) and 10 gms Cow’s ghee (clarified butter from cow), it must be mixed and consumed with milk once a day. The above combination is for one day. If the periods do not commence even after this medicine, then do not worry. Keep taking the above medicine. Eventually they will come and with proper ovulation.
The above simple remedy coupled with diet will definitely help and let you lead a normal menstrual life with kids and no infertility. In case you feel you need to evaluate this option more, try and consult a good Ayurveda physician. Having customized and specialized treatments will help you gain more. For example:
1. Generic preparations like Ashwagandharishta, Ashokarishta, Kumaryasava, Chandraprabha Vati, Pushyanug churna, Phal Ghrita, Raupya Bhasma, Vang Bhasma, Abrakh Bhasma, etc. are useful.
2. Panchakarma techniques like Basti, Uttar Basti, Vaman, Virechana, Nasya are also undertaken.
3. Certain yogic exercises like Simhasan, Vajrasan, Shalabhasan, Sarvangasan are also helpful and may be coupled with the above medicines
# Ayurveda says to do this before trying conception #
Besides the above remedies, the simple Ayurveda method to check if the periods are adulatory and with proper hormonal functions is to take a few drops of menstrual blood on a clean white cloth and wait for few seconds. Now wash the cloth with plain warm water (no soap, detergents) and observe if it leaves a pickle like stain. Clean periods as per Ayurveda must not leave stain on the cloth. Once you achieve that, you can then try conception !

HERBAL REMEDIES FOR SUMMER’S AILMENTS – SUNBURNS
# 1.NATURAL SUNSCREEN
Here’s a great sunscreen that doesn’t use harsh chemicals: …
3 tbsp. grated beeswax 3 tbsp shea butter 4 tbsp coconut oil 3 tbsp. aloe vera gel 3 tbsp. herbal tea (lavender or calendula is best) 1/2 tsp. borax powder
Take beeswax, shea butter, and coconut oil and melt it in a double boiler. (Do not boil). Now warm the aloe vera gel, tea and borax powder in a separate pan until the powder is mixed well with the other 2 ingredients. Mix it with the melted oil and butter. Whisk properly until you get a creamy texture. Store it in an airtight jar and keep it refrigerated. You can refrigerate it for up to a month if you have not used any preservative but if you use 5-6 drops of grapefruit seed extract (natural preservative), it will last more than a year. You can take it out of the fridge 10-15 minutes before applying.
# Cucumber Aloe Body Mask :
This is one of Great ways to soothe a sunburn – it’s quick, easy, and even smells nice !
2 cups chopped, peeled cucumber (those big lunky ones from the garden are perfect!) ¼ cup aloe vera gel 2 T whole milk yogurt Combine everything in a food processor, and blend until smooth. Store in the refrigerator, up to a week. Smooth over burned skin, and let sit til warm. Rinse, pat dry.
# Easy Sunburn Soothers :
Choose one of the following sunburn soothers: • Plain yogurt or sour cream • Buttermilk • Tomato juice • Witch hazel • Aloe vera gel • Chamomile tea • Apple cider vinegar (1 tablespoon diluted in 1 cup water
# Soothing Herbal Bath :
■¼ cup each dried calendula, plantain, peppermint and green tea ■1 quart boiling water ■½ cup witch hazel extract ■1 to 2 drops lavender essential oil ■½ cup baking soda ■½ cup aloe gel or juice ■2 tablespoons honey
Place herbs in a large pot and cover with boiling water. Steep 20 to 30 minutes, strain and discard the herbs. Set liquid aside. Fill bathtub with tepid water. Add herbal liquid to the bath along with the remaining ingredients. Soak for at least 20 minutes. Gently pat yourself dry. Repeat as needed.

AYURVEDIC DINACHARYA (Daily Routine) – YOUR MODERN GUIDE TO LIVE HEALTHY THROUGH AYURVEDA
We know doshas rule our bodies, but they also rule nature and the universe in the way of time and space. Remember, macrocosm vs. microcosm. We are tiny bits of this big nature that surrounds us, so when we go in accordance with nature, we will function at our best. This daily routine will help guide you as to which energies (doshas) govern which times of day. Doshas rule certain times of day, seasons, and stages of life, so once we know what energies are strongest at specific times, we can go with the flow of those energies to achieve overall balance.
■Vata: energy of movement
■Pitta: energy of transformation
■Kapha: energy of construction
■Agni: digestive fire
# 2 a.m. – 6 a.m. Vata Time: The body prepares itself to wake and start moving. Dreams start happening, there is movement in the bowels preparing for elimination, and the mind is closest to the higher self. It is best to wake 1 hour to 1/2 hour before sunrise so that you rise with the vata energy of movement. You will be surprised how energized you feel the rest of the day. Once sunrise hits, kapha period starts and you could have a groggy start to your day. So wake up, go to the bathroom (vata is responsible for elimination), drink water, and do your yoga and/or meditation. You could also exercise at this time of day because you will get moving easily.
# 6 a.m. – 10 a.m. Kapha Time: The energy of kapha is slow and steady. Eat a light breakfast around 7 or 7:30, just enough to tide you over til lunch. Your agni is weak from the night’s rest so you have to rekindle it. Kapha time is a great time to get the mundane tasks out of the way, cause kapha follows. Think about it, when you get to work, you’re not really creative or ready for any heavy strategy are you? Wouldn’t it be nice to just follow a simple task list, right when you get in, to get a bunch of thing done? That’s kapha.
# 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Pitta Time: Get ready to strategize, make new goals, organize, and analyze! This is pitta time and thoughts, perceptions, discriminations, and intellect are at their peak. Have strategic meetings now, when people are their sharpest and ready for a challenge. Noon is also when agni is strongest (because agni and pitta relate to the sun and sun is strongest around noon) so eat lunch at noon and make it your biggest meal. # 2 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Vata Time: At about 2 or 3, you are getting a little antsy…you might need a snack or you might feel a little bit chatty. Right? That’s vata wanting to move. You’re probably not really hungry, but you’re getting bored and your mind wants to wander. If you have afternoon meetings you might have a wandering mind and end up with doodles on your notes. This is a great time to create and innovate!! Creative work should be done at this time of day. And at the end of the work day, make a task list for the next morning. This will help your vata stay organized and your kapha will love to have a list when it gets in in the morning.
# 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Kapha Time: Relax! Have a light dinner. It’s kapha time so agni is not as strong. It’s time for family, relaxation, nurturing, and winding down. Get to bed by 10 so that you start sleeping in the slowness of kapha.
# 10:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m. Pitta Time: If you’ve stayed up past 10 (yea, most of us do), do you feel like you get a “second wind” and your brain starts going and you start working out the days problems in your head? That’s pitta kicking back in. Pitta will digest all thoughts, perceptions, foods, and everything given to your mind and body from the entire day. Pitta is working hard to move all that stuff through the entire digestion process. If you stay awake past 10, you might have a hard time falling asleep because your body and mind is a processing machine! # 2:00 a.m. – 6:00 a.m. And back to Vata: Where it eliminates all the stuff that pitta digested…and gets ready to start a new day fresh with new choices, new challenges and a nice task list waiting on their desk.

As a result of this, it has been shown to reduce graying and dandruff as well as hair loss. It is widely regarded as a very effective remedy for hair loss.
4.CELLULITE : Wheatgrass is the best solution to get rid of any kind of skin marks. Whether you eat it raw or crush and apply it, both methods will work towards getting rid of cellulite. You must drink plenty to water and keep your skin well hydrated so that it retains its flexibility and suppleness. This will automatically reduce any further appearance of cellulite. Make it a point to exfoliate your skin and then apply moisturizer at least twice a week. This will help you greatly. Massage with mustard oil. Smelly, but very, very effective.
# Anti-Aging Cucumber and Avocado Mask :
1/2 cup coarsely chopped peeled cucumber
1/2 cup coarsely chopped peeled avocado
1 egg white
2 Tsp. powdered milk
Place all ingredients in a blender and blend till smooth. Once done, place in a container and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Once cooled, apply to neck and face and leave on for 30 minutes. Then, rinse off first with warm water (to open pores) and then cool water (to close pores).
